A Journey to the Origin – The InteractionSeeds Video

It was nothing less than the project video for InteractionSeeds. Nothing could be simpler. You explain the idea, the implementation, and the goals. But it wasn’t as easy as it sounded. Above all, visualising effective collaboration between art and science proved to be quite complex. Too many levels of action and too much complexity presented the InteractionSeeds team with an unexpected challenge.

But how can these be overcome? How can creativity, research and innovation be conveyed in this context through video? Is it necessary to break away from the classic form of factual storytelling and look at this task from an artistic perspective? That is exactly what we did in the end, embarking on an exciting but also challenging journey with Spanish art performance artist Laura Salaverrya ‘Journey to the Origins‘.

Laura comes from Bilbao. She is a painter, dancer, musician, actress and, in this age of digital communication, also a video artist. She is a mother of five children and a woman with seemingly endless energy—the best prerequisites for visualising her view, an artist’s perspective on the InteractionSeeds project. However, the idea did not exactly spark a blazing fire during the first conversations with Laura. On the contrary, she seemed overwhelmed by all the complex levels, terms, and scientific methods.

‘At first, I was completely blocked. I have no idea about such projects, let alone those commissioned by the European Commission.’

But Laura quickly put her scepticism and respect aside and discovered her artistic passion and dedication to the idea. An incredible journey began to the origin, to the roots of what makes the collaboration between art and science so special – the human being. It was the beginning of the idea for Origin – the other InteractionSeeds project video. Laura’s creativity seemed boundless. She developed a story, wrote the music, designed costumes, choreographed her performance and sang the song ‘Come with me to the beat’:

Together with Laura, we finally succeeded in visualising the idea of InteractionSeeds in a unique piece of art. A video that expresses through artistic creativity the power and lasting influence that collaboration between science and art should have in our society, and the opportunities that collaborative work offers.

Laura produced the video with her team in her home region, the beautiful Basque Country near Bilbao. Here, project partner Gaia-Cluster has sown two fruitful seeds and launched the initiatives Inclusive and Culturally-Rooted Energy Communities and Smart Spaces for reduced Stress and Well-Being, both of which have a major impact.

A special highlight: Laura and her team captured the creative process on camera. From her initial feelings to the composition of the music that forms the basis of her creative work, right through to the preparations, Laura takes us on a journey back to the origins in the documentary Origin – the Documentary. Project partners also have their say, providing insights into the perspective of a European research project.

We hope you enjoy the video and the documentary, and would like to thank Laura and her team once again.
